Pet sitting agreement

Pet sitting is usually arranged in a text thread a week before a trip, and that thread rarely says what happens if the dog stops eating on day three or the flight home is delayed. This agreement settles the dates, the kind of care, the fee and who is responsible for what, so the owner can leave and the sitter knows exactly what they said yes to.

When to use it

  • You are a sitter or dog walker taking on a new client and want the dates and the fee confirmed in writing before you get a house key.
  • You are leaving town and a neighbor, a friend’s teenager or a sitter you found online will feed and walk your pet while you are gone.
  • The care happens away from home: the pet is boarding at the sitter’s place, and both of you want the drop-off and pick-up dates on record.
  • You book the same sitter again and again. Each trip gets its own short record instead of one vague “whenever you need me” arrangement.

A filled-in example

Priya is flying to her sister’s wedding and books Jordan, a dog walker from her building, to stay overnight with her beagle Waffles for five nights. They agree on $375 for the whole stay, sent by Venmo before Priya leaves.

What you fill in, and why

The app asks for 10 details in 3 short steps: “Who's involved?”, “Pet & care details”, “Payment”. The ones worth a moment’s thought:

Type of Care
Drop-in visits, an overnight stay at the owner’s home, boarding at the sitter’s home, dog walking and daycare are very different jobs at very different prices. Picking one makes it clear whether the sitter is sleeping at your place or popping in twice a day.
Common mistake: Choosing “Drop-in visits” and then expecting someone to be there overnight. If you need a mix — say, walks on weekdays and an overnight on Saturday — pick the main one and spell out the rest in the notes.
Care End Date
The last day of care is when the owner is back and the sitter’s responsibility stops. The app will not accept an end date that is not after the start date.
Common mistake: Setting it to the day your flight lands without a margin. If a delay means one more night, say in the notes what an extra day costs, so nobody has to negotiate it from an airport.
Total Fee
The fee for the whole booking, not a per-day rate. The agreement says it is due before or on the first day of care, which suits both sides: the sitter is not chasing money after the owner is back, and the owner pays once.
Type of Pet
Dog, cat, bird, rabbit, fish or other. With several animals, list each one by name and species in the notes — the pet’s name field holds one name, and a sitter should never discover a second cat on arrival.

Before you can save, the app checks: Care start date must be on or after the agreement date. Care end date must be after the start date.

What the signed record shows — and what it doesn’t

It shows

  • Which sitter agreed to look after which pet, between which dates, and what type of care that was.
  • The total fee, how it would be paid and that it was due by the first day of care.
  • That the owner said the pet was current on vaccinations and would provide food, medication and instructions.
  • That the sitter agreed to follow those instructions and contact the owner about any health concern.
  • When each of you signed, recorded on the certificate page of the PDF.

It doesn’t show

  • What the care instructions actually said. Keep them in writing — a note on the fridge or a message — alongside the PDF.
  • That the pet was healthy at drop-off. If there is an existing issue, describe it in the notes before the sitter signs.
  • That any visit happened. Photo updates and messages during the stay are the record of that.

When this isn’t enough

  • You run pet care as a business with employees or a staff of walkers. Licensing, insurance and bonding requirements for pet care differ by state and by city, and a one-page record between two people does not cover them. Check with your city or county before taking on clients.
  • The pet has a serious medical condition that needs injections, fluids or close monitoring. Write the instructions down in full, separately, and give the sitter your vet’s contact details. The agreement records that care instructions were provided; it is not the instructions themselves.
  • The sitter will stay in your home for weeks and you are also asking them to look after the house: mail, plants, a security system, a car. Add those duties to the notes, or keep a separate list, so the fee is clearly for all of it.

How signing works

  1. You fill in the template in the Agreely app and sign it first.
  2. You send the other person one link — by text, WhatsApp, email, anything.
  3. They read the same document in their browser, type or draw their signature, and both of you get the identical signed PDF.

Signatures are captured under the U.S. ESIGN Act and UETA, with a certificate page recording who signed, when, and from which device.

Questions people ask

Who pays if the pet needs a vet while I am away?

The template does not set a dollar amount for that, so add one in the notes: something like “sitter may take Waffles to Elm Street Animal Hospital and the owner will pay the bill, up to $500 without a call.” It also says the sitter is not responsible for pre-existing health conditions or illness, which is why describing those up front matters.

What about the house key and the alarm code?

Hand those over in person or by message, not in the agreement. The signed PDF is shared with both of you and kept for a long time; a door code does not belong in it. The notes can simply say how and when the key will be returned.

Can I use this for regular dog walking, not just a single trip?

Yes. Choose “Dog walking”, set the start and end of the period you are agreeing on — a month, for example — and put the schedule (“weekdays at noon, 30 minutes”) in the notes. When the period ends, start a new agreement with the next dates.

Does the sitter need the app to sign?

No. Whoever creates the agreement signs it first in the app and sends a link. The other person opens it in their phone’s browser, reads the whole thing and signs there — no account and no download. They should save the signed PDF right away, because the link stops working once it is signed.

What if the trip is cancelled?

The template does not include a cancellation rule, so agree on one and write it in the notes before signing — for example, a full refund up to 48 hours before the start date and half after that. Without it, a cancellation becomes a conversation instead of a sentence you can point to.
